First hour after HEIC to JPG install

The install only pays off when one local convert works. Use the checklist below on the same machine that just received ImageMagick. Longer OS paths live under guides.
Eight first-hour steps
- Launch ImageMagick Open ImageMagick from the PATH / Start menu shortcuts, AppImage or PATH so the shell with magick on PATH appears.
- Add one local photo file Add an HEIC or other supported file that already lives on your disks. Do not hunt for iCloud rip workflows.
- Choose JPG output Select JPG as the JPEG quality target and pick an output folder you control on an internal or known external drive.
- Run one short convert Convert the proof file and confirm the new JPG plays in a normal media player before you batch more photos.
- Note the update door Write whether this machine used Windows x64 setup, portable zip, Homebrew formula, Homebrew, AppImage or apt so the next update stays honest.
- Optional batch later Only after the proof convert works, add more files or explore batch queues if your library needs them.
- Keep originals Keep source media until you accept the outputs. Reimages and accidental deletes are common on shared desks.
- Skip mirror-site updaters Return to GitHub Releases, Homebrew, AppImage, or apt for updates. Refuse third-party converter updaters from search ads.
What success looks like
Success is a new JPG beside your chosen folder that plays cleanly. Success is not three download folders full of renamed setups. If the first convert fails, re-check that the source has an HEIC decode and that the output path is writable before you download another mirror.
SmartScreen or Gatekeeper prompts are common on first launch. Prefer the Releases URL or package command you typed yourself. First run detail: first run. Safety: is it safe.
Windows notes

Homebrew formula imagemagick is the fast path when brew is available. Otherwise open the Homebrew formula and drag ImageMagick into Applications. macOS guide: install on macOS.

After the proof convert
Batch more files only after the proof works. Switch habits from upload sites with switch from online converters. Compare options on vs online converters.
Document the update door on the machine ticket. Shared desks lose hours when nobody remembers whether or the Windows setup owns the next bump.
Mistakes in the first hour
Downloading a second mirror-site copy to fix a blocked first run. Inventing a winget id. Uploading the same file to a browser converter “just to compare” on a network you do not trust. Skipping the proof convert and jumping into a 400-file overnight batch.

Repeat the proof after reimages
Lab images drift. After every reimage, run one short heic to jpg convert again before you call the desk ready. That habit catches missing remotes, vanished portable zip folders, and mirror-site shortcuts that reappear from old bookmark exports.
